Sustainable Living

There is a lot of ‘greenwashing’ in business. We’re not eco-warriors but are extremely worried about the climate crisis. So we’ve made a personal commitment to live more sustainably and to make our properties as low impact as possible.

Rather than not talk about it, we are sharing something of our journey so far, as well as future plans.  Of course, we understand that our 19th century cottages and 17th century home will never be as well-insulated or eco-friendly as a new build. Retro fitting is beyond the scope of our budget now and we have to begin somewhere.

      • We’ve done a lot of research into the companies we buy from – ethical and not tested on animals.

      • While we’re currently using ecover, we are keen to support smaller and local businesses.

      • The first baby steps are easier; harder stuff comes next.

      • There’s a big measurement piece that we haven’t got to yet.

    Planet-friendly Products

We are very happy to showcase a brand that’s passionate about using natural ingredients in their products, but also doing right by the planet.

We 😍 this brand as their tagline is “what’s good for the planet can also be good for your bum”🙂. They claim their loo roll feels good on more than your conscience, and we certainly agree.

    Renewable Energy & Water

Soon after moving, we switched to a 100% renewable electricity provider and replaced most if not all the lighting with LED bulbs. For 2024 we are looking at switching to solar.

We have already installed a few solar powered lights in the communal garden area for mood lighting, when sitting out or coming home after dusk.

Most importantly, the old night storage heaters in 2 of the 5 cottages have been replaced by more efficient modern wifi-enabled ones with thermostat control.

We have plans to do more in future, so will keep you updated.

    Cleaning & Laundry

We are doing our best to eliminate single-use plastic in our home and cottages.

You will find environmentally friendly Ecover  and SMOL cleaning products, and Who Gives A Crap Dream cloths under the kitchen sink and beside the toilet.

    Wildlife and Protecting Diversity

As proud supporters and members of The Herefordshire Wildlife Trust (HWT), we are trying to “Act Local” and doing our small bit to tackle the loss of nature and climate crisis.
